Last week I spent a few days in Bucos, learning how to knit the local traditional lace socks. These socks were worn with wooden clogs by local men (women wore plain knee-high socks without feet) and reserved for sundays and other special occasions. They were and still are knitted from handspun yarn, worked tightly on five handmade point hook needles, tensioning the yarn behind the neck in the traditional portuguese style. The pattern will be published soon, in collaboration with the museum of Cabeceiras de Basto.
