Comprei aqui estas meias tradicionais balcânicas, provavelmente turcas. Tive umas em criança, que usei até à exaustão como pantufas, e há uns anos, quando comecei a fazer meias, fascinaram-me as técnicas e padrões usados nesta região. É interessante ver como recentemente passou a ser possível encontrar este tipo de peças à venda online, seja através de empresas que promovem o património etnográfico de regiões específicas, seja em páginas criadas por pessoas que encontram novos públicos para o que sempre viram fazer e usar em casa.
Para aprender, o melhor livro é a meu ver o Ethnic Socks and Stockings de Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts, de que aqui se conseguem ver com detalhe algumas páginas. É aliás um dos meus livros de tricot preferidos, com técnicas raras e claramente explicadas. Os fios a usar devem ser finos, de lã e apropriados para jacquard.
Balcanic socks
I’ve recently ordered these traditional socks from the Balkans online. I had a pair as a child, bought by my grandparents in Turkey, and a few years ago, when I started making socks, I was fascinated by the techniques and patterns of balcanic knitting. It’s interesting to see how easy it is now to find something like this online, either through companies that promote the ethnographic heritage of specific regions, or directly from people who have started selling their own work, still made following their country’s traditional patterns.
Ethnic Socks and Stockings by Priscilla A. Gibson-Roberts is in my opinion the best book to learn eastern european sock knitting techniques (a few pages can be seen in detail here) and one of my all-time favorite knitting books, with some rare techniques clearly explained.
